CULTIVATE - EU (Cultural Heritage Applications Network), Project approved on 29.12.1999 as accompanying measure of Information Society Technology - IST within the Key Action III, "Multimedia Contents and Tools", provides the creation of a network of the European cultural heritage through the involvement of 14 partners of 12 European countries.
CULTIVATE is a pan-European network for the Digital Cultural Heritage community including IT staff, information professionals, researchers, managers, policy makers, libraries, museums, archives, galleries, non-profit organisations etc.
CULTIVATE is the answer to the need for a newly structured network supporting the co-operation of all memory institutions (e.g. archives, libraries and museums) under the European Commission's Information Society Technologies (IST) Programme.
CULTIVATE provides a range of services at European level as well as individual support for proposers at national level. Each member country supports the network by designated staff of a governmental department or a national institution, acting as the so-called National Node.
The OPIB participates in the CULTIVATE-EU project as national node for Italy.
Services at European Level
The Cultivate web site supports one of the most important CULTIVATE objectives: information dissemination. The web site provides a searchable main site with the additional functionality of cross searching the national node web sites and Cultivate Interactive.
The content of the CULTIVATE web site includes:
- Information on the project, partners, aims, objectives and activities
- Links to the other CULTIVATE services
- Monthly News Update
- Information on the IST Programme
- Information on Calls for Proposals in the Digita Heritage and Cultural Content area
- Information on project results
- Links to related sites.
Cultivate Interactive is a new pan-European web magazine that forms part of the CULTIVATE network activities. It aims to provide a forum for users to find out more about the Digital Heritage and Cultural Content (DIGICULT) area of the European Commission's Information Society Technologies (IST) Programme, about other EU and non-EU programmes in that area and also about the results of projects. Cultivate Interactive provides a valuable opportunity for DIGICULT project holders to disseminate information about their work. Contributions from project holders as well as users of the deliverables of DIGICULT projects are particularly welcome. There are also contributions on topics of interest to the cultural heritage industry, including conference announcements, reports on conferences and other events invited.
Cultivate Interactive is published every four months and contains Feature Articles on DIGICULT projects and other key areas, Regular Columns such as “National Nodes”, “At the Event” and “Praxis”. It also includes a News & Events section containing European news and job postings.
Cultivate Project has been closed on March 31, 2003, but there should be a course within the VI Framework Programme -some proposals have been presented to the European Commission-.
