InterPARES 3 (2007-2012)
The Project
The InterPARES Project (International Research on Permanent Authentic Records in Electronic Systems), now in its third phase (preceded by InterPARES 1 and InterPARES 2 http://www.interpares.org/ip_director_welcome.cfm), is an international initiative in which archival researchers and computer engineers, representatives of national archival institutions and private industries, are working together to develop theory and methods capable of ensuring the long term preservation of digital records.
Objectives and duration of the Project
The InterPARES 3 Project began in 2007 and will continue until 2012. This third phase of the Project will translate the theory and methods of digital preservation developed by InterPARES 1 and 2, and other research endeavours to date into concrete action plans for existing bodies of records that are to be kept over the long term by archives—and archival/records units within organizations—endowed with limited resources.
The Direction of the entire Project is funded by Canada’s Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council’s Community-University Research Alliances (CURA) grant, which also supports TEAM Canada, the name of which derives from the specific title given to this third phase of the Project: Theoretical Elaborations into Archival Management (TEAM).
