AGAMEMNON - Pictures from the Past: A wireless network of magic digital cameras and Palmtops for Archaeological Travels through time.

Agamemnon plans to exploit 3G mobile phones equipped with embedded cameras as the input/output device making use of graphical interfaces and voice-based commands to provide visitors to archaeological sites and museums with a personalised, information-enriched experience, while at the same time contributing to the preservation of cultural heritage.

In a 30-month activity, starting on 1 January 2004, Agamemnon plans to develop a prototype application for mobile phones featuring:

  • Advanced image analysis techniques on pictures taken by phone-embedded cameras in order to identify users attention (what they are looking at)
  • Personalised multimedia information delivery based on user attention and profile, leveraging on 3G services (i.e. 3-D monument reconstructions, history, movies, etc…)
  • Advanced user profiling based on static questionnaires and unobtrusive dynamic human behaviour/preferences analysis
  • Voice-based commands interaction in various European languages
  • Active role played by the visitors in preserving cultural heritage through specifically tagged picture-taking.

The prototype will be tested in three different locations:

Paestum and Pompeii in southern Italy and Mycene in Greece. By February 2005 a first release of the Prototype will be available for testing, and by November 2005 the final release will be ready.
