For the first time, Eurostat, the Statistical Office of the European Communities, has gathered the main available culture statistics comparable at a European level in a single publication - Cultural statistics. The publication includes chapters on cultural employment, enterprises and external trade as well as cultural expenditure and participation.
- First-ever European strategy for culture: contributing to economic growth and intercultural understanding
The European Commission on May 10th, 2007 adopted a policy statement on the role of culture in a globalising world. It proposes the first-ever European strategy for culture. The Communication affirms the central role of culture in the process of European integration and proposes a cultural agenda for Europe, and for its relations with third countries. Its adoption follows an extensive consultation process involving decision-makers and interested parties from all over Europe.
- Convention on the Protection and Promotion of the Diversity of Cultural Expressions
The Convention on the Protection and Promotion of the Diversity of Cultural Expressions adopted on 20 October 2005 and ratified on 18th March 2007, by the UNESCO General Conference is a binding international legal instrument. Its goal is to protect and promote the diversity of cultural expressions, particularly as embodied and conveyed in cultural activities, goods, and services, which are the vehicles of contemporary culture. It sets out to create a legal framework favourable to all with regard to the production, distribution, dissemination, access to and enjoyment of a wide range of cultural expressions of diverse origin.
- Study on the Economy of Culture in Europe
On 13 November 2006, the Council held an exchange of views on the economy of culture in Europe, based on a study prepared for the Commission by KEA European Affairs, made available in October.

- Openarchives.eu
Openarchives.eu is the European guide to OAI-PMH compliant digital repositories in the world. This is not a search engine to find metadata stored in the repositories but a searchable index of the repositories themselves. This portal uses repositories and collection descriptions harvested from the University of Illinois OAI-PMH Data Provider Registry. The search engine and other editorial contents that complete the originary database have been developed by Horizons Unlimited srl (Bologna - Italy).

- Adopt a Mediterranean heritage
The Euromed Heritage programme has launched a new and innovative initiative called Adopt a Mediterranean Heritage that aims at facilitating the interaction between international investors and Mediterranean tangible cultural heritage, to support its conservation and promotion.
- Eighth Culture Week 2006
From April 2 to 9 will be held in Italy the VIII Culture Week for the year 2006. It represents the most important yearly showcase of the Ministry for Cultural Heritage and Activities with promotion activities and culture enhancement all around Italy.
- The Bibliomediateca of Santa Cecilia in Rome
On November 22nd, 2005 has been opened the new Bibliomediateca dell'Accademia romana di Santa Cecilia the Auditorium del Parco della musica designed by Renzo Piano.
The Bibliomediateca includes rich and various documents, it is devoted to music: "a paper and multimedia library", publications reading, scores, programmes, and photos sight, as well as music listening in the wide space of 700 square meters with 80 reading spaces 27 of which multimedia where the connection with other national and international music institutions will available.
The European Commission announced that it is to boost its policy of preserving and exploiting Europe's written and audiovisual heritage. At a time when the internet and the digital technologies available on many technical platforms are an everyday part of the life of European citizens, tapping the potential of our written text, image and sound archives is of major importance in economic terms as much as in cultural terms. The Commission plans to issue a communication by July outlining the stakes involved and identifying the obstacles to using written and audiovisual archives in the European Union. The communication will be accompanied by a proposal for a Recommendation aimed at enlisting all the public players concerned and facilitating public-private partnerships in the task of digitising our heritage.
