  • An unlimited source of Internet addresses to be on stream in Europe by 2010
    Increasing demand for Internet based services means that there would not be enough addresses to support this expected growth, if no action is taken. Encouraging internet users and providers to adopt the latest Internet Protocol (IP version 6 or IPv6) will provide a massive increase in address space, much in the same way as telephone numbers were lengthened in the 20th century. The European Commission today set Europe a target of getting 25% of EU industry, public authorities and households to use IPv6 by 2010, calling for concerted action at European level to get all actors prepared for a timely, efficient change to avoid extra costs for consumers and give innovative European companies a competitive advantage.
  • Springer and Dutch library consortium (UKB) to cooperate in open access initiative
    The Dutch consortium of research libraries, UKB, and Springer have signed a letter of intent to the effect that they will jointly explore the potential of open access publishing. This is the first time a prominent scientific publisher and a consortium of research libraries explicitly join forces on an open access initiative.
  • The Digital Divide in Europe: Eurostat publication
    On November 10th, 2005 Eurostat published "the Digital Divide in Europe, statistics in Focus".
    In the EU 25, 85% of students (aged 16 or more in school or university) used the internet during the first quarter of 2004, as did 60% of employees, 40% of the unemployed and 13% of the retired, compared to an EU25 average of 47% for individuals aged from 16 to 74. This divide by employment status is also found by educational level: only 25% of those with at most lower secondary education used the internet during the first quarter of 2004, while the proportion rose to 52% for those who had completed secondary education, and 77% for those with a tertiary education.
  • Internet activities in the European Union - Statistics in focus
    Over the past years, Internet penetration has been growing fast in the EU. Internet access in enterprises is reaching saturation in most countries, but in households too Internet access tends to no longer be the exception but rather the rule. This Statistics In Focus is looking at what this constantly growing group of Internet users is doing on the Internet. The publication gives indications of what type of people (in terms of age, gender, educational level, etc.) are using which kind of facilities offered on the Internet. It also takes a look at enterprises' web presence and why they use the Internet.
  • RightsWatch Project White Paper
    RightsWatch is the name of a research project aimed at developing consensus and promoting awareness of self-regulatory notice and takedown (NTD) procedures for Europe, as a tool to achieve prompt removal of copyright-infringing material from the Internet.The RightsWatch team have drafted a White Paper A Way Forward for Notice and Takedown which summarises the work of the RightsWatch project and its key results in a way that we hope is easily accessible.

  • Towards One Million registred Domains in Italy
    In Italy there are about Nine hundred thousands registred domains and this data is growing quickly, considering the 15 thousands requests for new domains every month. These data have been elaborated by the Cnr - Istituto di Informatica e Telematica (Iit), which is the Institute which assigns the ".it" domain. tosono novecentomila i domini registrati e il dato è in continua crescita considerando le oltre 15 mila richieste al mese. I dati sono stati elaborati dall'Istituto di Informatica e Telematica (Iit) del Cnr, organismo che gestisce l'assegnazione del dominio ".it". Italy is in third position (for domains number) in Europe, after Germany and United Kingdom.
    • One Billion Euro for the success of Information and Communication Technologies in Europe
      The Union’s priority for R&D in Information Society Technologies (IST) aims to bring technologies closer to people, ensuring that all Europe’s citizens and businesses can, and actually do benefit from technological advance. As a result of the first IST Call for Proposals under the sixth Framework Programme, the Commission’s Information Society Directorate-General will be launching 236 new IST projects to the tune of 1 billion Euro of Community funding. This represents the largest award of its kind in the history of the Framework Programme.

Topics are updated continuously throughout the day, so you will see new stories each time you check the page. Google has developed an automated grouping process for Google News that pulls together related headlines and photos from thousands of sources worldwide - enabling you to see how different news organizations are reporting the same story. The service is now available in Italy, too.
